Duramax (Johnson) Cutless© Bearings are the industry standard in water lubricated shaft bearings. Not only is RE Thomas Marine Hardware an authorized retailer, we also feature them in our complete line of marine running gear components.
Cutless bearings are an integral part of an inboard marine propulsion system. They support the propeller shaft while allowing it to spin freely transmitting power from the engine to the propeller.
How Often Should Duramax Johnson Cutless Bearings Be Replaced:
Similar to tires on car, Cutless bearings need to be changed out after a certain amount of time. Cutless bearings should be checked at least once a year to ensure they’re still in good condition. If there is excessive “play” in your boat’s propeller shaft, you should speak to your marine mechanic or boat yard about replacement.
Failure of Water Lubricated Shaft Bearings:
You should also be aware of other issues that can affect the average lifespan of your boat’s Cutless bearings. The biggest thing to worry about is entanglement in rope or other marine debris. Debris can disrupt the flow of water across the Cutless bearing cause it to overheat and “burn out”.
RE Thomas Marine Hardware has several solutions to protect your boat’s running gear from entanglement in marine debris. The first is our Piranha Dual Line Cutter shaft mounted cutting device. The second is our Rope Shield Device that caps off the end of your boat’s stern bearing housing helping to protect the rubber channels of the water lubricated bearing.
Water Flow Concerns:
You also want to be sure you have adequate waterflow across your boat’s cutless bearing. Even if your bearings are protected from marine debris, not having enough water flow through your shaft tube or stern bearing can be catastrophic.
Make sure your shaft sealing system has an adequate supply of water being fed through it. You may want to consider upgrading your boat’s dripless shaft seal to one of our heavy duty self-aligning shaft seal systems.
