R.E. Thomas Marine Hardware skeg bearings are precision machined from heavy duty cast bronze.
They’re available in “inverted”, “regular” and “bored-through” versions and offer premium support for skeg supported rudder shafts typical on “Downeast” and similar styled boats.

If you’re thinking of re-powering your boat with more horsepower, don’t forget to upgrade your steering system as well. You’d be surprised by how many of our customer’s reach out to us with cracked rudder ports, and leaky stuffing boxes.
More often than not, the culprit is that the boat’s horsepower was increased but steering system (rudder, rudder post, and rudder port) was left original.
If your boat was originally designed with a 250 horsepower engine, you can’t expect the rudder port, rudder shaft, and skeg bearing to handle the increased stress while maintaining an adequate safety factor.
